Grey Hair: Why I Decided to Embrace it

"You're going to look old." That was the standard response to my mission of embracing my natural brunette hair color again with all its fine silver sparkling highlights and greying patches, after a decade of bleaching it platinum blonde.

Already in my mid twenties I knew that I wanted to have long silver hair one day. That one day, when I am old. But when is that? Is there an actual number, an appropriate age, when it is legitimate to embrace your grey hair?

Having small breasts never bothered me. And yet, I was always certain that I would one day have surgery on them should they be empty from breast feeding or hang with age. Instead of using implants, I would have opted for my own body’s extra bit of fat, but it’s the same, isn’t it? How come I have changed my mind?

Shortly after I began photographing women and while witnessing—photo shoot after photo shoot—how we all relentlessly shame ourselves and our bodies, two questions arose in me that wouldn’t leave: “What is beauty? And why is it so hard to love ourselves?”

As I dived deep into researching beauty, I soon realized that there is no actual fact that defines if one is beautiful or not. Every era in history has got its own ideal of beauty. An ideal that changes as we change as a society…
